The US Supreme Court frequently goes beyond interpreting the words of the constitution to trying to find some general principles in the constitution and then using those principles in support of their political agenda.

I've heard that claim a number of times, sometimes with the word "activist". But I've never read anything that could actually support the claim. What I have seen a lot of are people [left, right and middle] who don't like the decision[s] of the Court and label the Court as going beyond interpreting the Constitution. They always address a group of people that also don't like the decision, hence no one really ever challenges the claim.

what the Constitution actually says and what the intentions of the original writers of the constitution where.

IMO, with very few exceptions the Court is handed cases that are difficult; that's why they made it to the Supreme Court to begin with. On a few cases, I try to read the opinion of the Court and the dissenting opinion. While the emotions/words at times are strong, rarely do I ever see either side trying to exercise any political agenda. ...

Well, if the Court disagrees with MY opinion, than certainly they are exercising a political agenda, but that's the only exception. <s>
