The question of what turns up as gdp is not new -- for example a car accident can generate a lot of gdp in repairs and medical care but is hardly a useful addition to social output in the sense that we are better off as people if there are more and more car accidents. Nor is the debate about the contribution of computers to productivity. It is, for example, a thorn in the side of the computer industry to know that there is almost no evidence that computer use improves the productivity of the computer user -- much less that faster computers are themselves a net addition to productivity.
