I hear you. I have waffled back and forth on this one. It's a tax with a laudable goal that at the same time seems inherently unfair. The goal is to prevent the multi-generational accumulation of vast wealth that effectively creates an American aristocracy. And there is a good argument that even at a 50% rate, it has failed (think Kennedy) because of the many ways of evading it. And there is an arbitrariness to it that makes it seem little more than legalized theft.
