Actually, SUNW needs to maintain as much differentiation as possible from Linux and other Unixes to avoid the trap of commoditization. SUNW's whole marketing strategy is based on being "better" than Linux, not compatible with it. I doubt that Linux would solve the "vacationeer's dilemma" you pose. If a business wishes to shut down for three weeks per year that is certainly a choice they can make. Any other choice seems to be akin to passing a law that fires may only happen at certain convenient times.
