Hi Maurice: the easiest and cheapest way of dealing with fuel alternatives is for the starts make the current use more efficient. For Germany the calculation yields a decrease in the power consumption in the order of 15% if some sensible precautions are taken on and accepted by population. And that means without having to give up any convenience, everybody can keep his SUV etc. Fighting entropy is far better than any other (brute force like Nuclear energy) approach.

I see a big chance in a marriage of photovoltaic and biological/cell membrane technologies. After all nothing can beat clorophile and the ATP-based energy cascades in a cell. But this is low-level, base load kind of energy production - which btw is the most expensive, if not implemented properly.
