Yes. I remember the "convergence" theory well. What hutzpah it was, especially for people who had just LIVED through WWII. The Stalinist intransigence chased it out of our national debate. Turned out Stalin had about as accurate an understanding of the US as Hitler had.

One offshoot of "convergence", though, must, in retrospect, be given some credit. The idea of some US experts was that it would be unnecessary to expand the Cold War into a WWIII because the Soviet Union would, if it did not reform, eventually collapse under the weight of it's own corruption. Constant Cold War pressure from Truman right through Reagan actually did bring that about...
