There are plenty of things that are unimaginable, in a strict sense, for example, the moment before the Big Bang, and yet are conceptually valid. Furthermore, it is normal to use familiar imagery when trying to elucidate that which strictly eludes the imagination. Finally, the universe has a discrete beginning, in the sense that time and space began when it began, but God does not, and therefore there was no point where the universe did not exist--- from the perspective of eternity.
