Dave,

re: How about a combination of an operating system and office suite that are at least on a par with Microsoft's but cost hundreds of dollars less? I'm just guessing here, but I think consumers might go for that.

First, I don't believe "consumers" buy PC's to run Office suites. That's just a bit of icing, or atleast a good rationalization to use on yourself when buying a "kick-ass" game machine for the home.

As for saving a few hundred bucks, business desktops and IT don't seem to care about that savings. The long term support costs far exceed the purchase price of any computer and application suite. Otherwise Dell would be hawking AMD Athlons and business desktops would be awash in "cheaper" Athlon machines.

Now, don't misunderstand - I think Linux is an excellent UNIX substitute and several CAD vendors have started to support it with their tools. It also makes a very effective web server, dns, sendmail etc. but exactly how many dns and web servers does one company need? Engineers and IT server operators love Linux the rest of the world just doesn't get it.

I suppose I could say, they don't get it "yet" - but I don't believe they ever will.
