"Fixing" SS by dumping money into the stock markets would be good for the people running the stock markets, which somewhat explains the popularity of the idea in certain circles.

Yes it would be good for wall street. It also would mean that the money is invested in owning something rather then spent. There would be a real trust fund. If I write myself some IOUs I have not created a trust fund, even if I call them Fowler bonds, or if I create different accounts to do the borrowing and lending.

Personally I think the money should not be 100% in stocks but it could be put in to US bonds, local or state bonds, foreign bonds, coporate bonds, real estate trusts or any other investment you care to mention as well as stocks.
