Kapkan, <Clock frequency rating is based on the average performance of a 2GHz P4 microprocessor executing industry standard benchmarks.>

So you'd advocate publishing a false clock speed just to prove that clock speeds have little relation to actual performance? I don't think even Steve Jobs would resort to this level of deceit.

Kap:

Why not send your great idea to your buddies at One AMD Place?

<<It does not have to be a PR-rating. IMO all Athlon 4s and MPs systems should be displayed on the shelves and in print as say:

2GHz* Athlon MP

With a fine print foot note:

* Clock frequency rating is based on the average performance of a 2GHz P4 microprocessor executing industry standard benchmarks.

The bar charts of the said benchmarks should be displayed on retail shelves and in print ads.

A sudden, well-planned move like this one would generate a lot of controversy and free media exposure and will start a public debate of performance vs. GHz. There is a good chance that Intel will loose this debate, since they don't have facts on their side. In addition to poor IPC, P4 has few other skeletons in the closet like clock throttling and running the decoder at half the advertised GHz.

Kap,

2GHz* Athlon MP

Good suggestion. Removes the baggage of the PR rating. I would say the GHz part is slightly deceptive even with the disclaimer. One can make it a little less deceptive by dropping the Hz part and just using the numbers with a G at the end.
Since SSE implementation kicks in with Palmino, AMD could launch Palamino with something like this:

AMD introduces its 4th Generation Athlon at speeds exceeding exceeding Intel's P4. The new Athlon4 2G* blah, blah, blah...

And line up a few magazine and web review to back it up in a promotional campaign.

kap, never thought of all the free publicity 2GHz* would provide.

In print ads the footnote could even list the benchmarks and the fact that iNTEL has either a partial or controlling interest in them (Sysmark 2001=BAPCO, Content Creation=Ziff Davis, etc.)
