The Spanish had a several hundred year claim on what is now California. That didn't stop us from grabbing it. Nor did Mexico's claim on much of Texas stop Texans from going to war with Mexico to steal the land from them. Nor did France's claim on much of Eastern Canada stop the British from stealing the land from the French. Nor did Native American's claims on much of what later became the U.S. stop white settlers from stealing the land from them. Precedence means nothing, except in cartoonland.
