It is one thing to wonder what it tells about us that substantial numbers watch such shows, and another to hope to derive much insight from them directly. It is hard to tell much about society from walking through the sideshow tents of a circus......

Did you see 42 up? It's by Michel Apted. It's magnificent. I've been watching this series all my life. They are about my age so I find this absolutely riveting film-making.
