If you've been watching carefully, you may have noticed that the death of rock-throwers dropped sharply after the first couple of months of the intifada. At first, crowds of rock-throwers (the shebab) were attacking IDF outposts at places like Netzarim Junction. This followed the pattern of the first intifada. What was new, was the fact that armed Palestinian militias (the Tanzim) would join the rock-throwers, firing at the IDF soldiers, thus drawing live fire in return. These gun battles accounted for large numbers of Palestinian casualities, including the pictures of the death of Mohmaed al Durra & his father that were seen around the world. After a few months, the rock-throwers stopped coming and it was just the gunmen attacking the IDF outposts.

Re <<If you throw rocks (or in some cases shoot guns) at armed soldiers then civilian or not you are putting yourself at risk. >>

Rocks is all they got. Apparently that makes their life worth less.
