Perhaps you need to read the article again.

It would appear under close examination that your government is $crewing you.

The U.S. lumber industry contends that Americans have been obtaining lumber to build their houses from Canada at bargain prices.

Your industry and your government would like you to pay more for your lumber and hence more for a roof over your head.

Is is a little difficult to understand how you would conclude that "you guys" probably meaning Canadians were $crewing you.

And if you dig a little deeper you will find that the contention is more specifically that the Canadian and/or provincial governments are not charging American companies enough of a "stumpage fee" read tax for the privilige of harvesting our forests to put a roof over your heads.

Go figure. Do you suppose that the Japanese complain that they are not paying enough for their lumber?

Perhaps you would like to pay more for your oil and gas too. Just write a letter to your congressman and tell them that you feel that you are not paying enough and you want them to legislate a higher price for you. You might want to inquire as to how many similiar letters thay have received to know just how large of a groundswell of popular support there is for the issue.

I'm sure that you would also want to ensure that all tariff moneys collected would be sent back to Canada to be used for reforestration or the areas harvested and not just soaked up by the hogs at the public trough.

Tariffs Imposed on Canada Lumber

Told you USA can't compete... Under WTO your country was told to remove the Tariffs, yet they still exist.... You guys need your Nukes because you are still running lumber mills like they did on that TV show called the Waltons. Some day you'll realize that the world has left you guys behind.

Hutch
PS: Just you wait. In a few years when OPEC runs dry, and you depend on Alberta OIL... We'll screw you big time.

Your few hundreds of porcine timber baron buddies down there in Crackerland are not only planning to rip off US homebuyers for billions, they are attempting to manipulate the internal affairs of a sovereign nation, while passing up the opportunity to learn from that nation the greater efficiencies possible through careful thought and astute investment in production optimisation technology and plain canadian hard honest work.

This is not some mickey mouse little Grenada here that you can invade in a few days for the purpose of handing out some shiney medals [lol] and distracting the headlines from dismal domestic policies, not some sparsely populated 1840s México from which you can rip off half the territory and then teach your children that the murdering thieves were heroes, not some struggling independence movement on the other side of the planet that you can machine-gun and napalm with impunity because 'what the hell they're only gooks', this is a nation of thirty millions of educated resourceful individuals with a language common to your own, polite and friendly to a fault but fierce in war when pushed to the point when it becomes necessary .... which it won't be in this case due to upcoming awareness among your domestic consumers who won't like getting their pockets picked by some special interest group ... you can't dictate to us a land tenure structure of your choice, that's just a non-starter.

Btw, now that you've stimulated my annual post here, some of your responses to the dispassionate factual input of Bob Johnson have nauseated me, made me more than a little questioning of the portion of my genes that trace back to goldbuggerdom ... but nothing new in that, and you're not the only one on the thread ... the path to the swamp of religion is a descent from the heights of intellect, our species is capable of better, try not to shame us.

Re: Canadian stumpage fees too low (ggggggggggggggg)AKA the U.S. government charges your industry more than the Canadians, and your lumber guys are crying to mommy about it,...so your government listens to the U.S. lumber lobby which squeals like the big porkers they are, every time they experience real competition and says let's screw the U.S. consumer and jack up the lumber prices so we can save a few jobs in the lumber industry. As your intelligent politicians proceed down the road of raising raw material prices for this industry, you will cool another area of your economy that currently is still producing jobs, revenue and profits,... the homebuilding industry and the Home Depot type stores. Makes perfect sense to you Americans I guess.

The simple fact of the matter is the Canadian governments do not charge as much to cut down Canadian trees on government owned land in relative terms, than the American governments do. Stumpage fees are just another form of bullchit government tax we all must live with, and a redneck like you should want to get rid of such B.S. taxes. I guess you aren't as much as a redneck as I thought you were.

The only thing the governments should be doing is to make sure the lumber industries replant the trees, and return the environment back to the way it was before they cut down the trees, and the companies should be monitored by the government to ensure this happens, and this government monitoring and research should be paid for by the stumpage fees. What is the U.S. government using all the excess stumpage fees they charge your domestic producers for?,...perhaps that is the question you should be asking your government, rather than harassing your Canadian neighbors.

The Canadian negotiator your government will be dealing with this time is a Canadian hothead called Pettigrew,...should be a good fight, and if your homebuilding and lumber retailers lobby groups come to the party this time your forestry lobby porkers squealing may get drowned out. It's only the first inning.
