Looks like Carlos the Jackal and German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer are old comrades in arms.

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, the infamous terrorist known as “Carlos the Jackal,” issued a written statement from his French prison cell saying he stored automatic weapons and explosives at the commune Fischer ran with fellow radical Daniel Cohn-Bendit, now a member of the European Parliament. Ramirez said Fischer later ordered the weapons removed and they were taken to another location. Fischer denies any knowledge of Carlos’ weapons.

Gustave, I do not see evidence to support your conclusions. I think your "Byzantine alliance" leaves one very major player out of the calculations...Turkey. Turkey is a rising regional power, coming into a natural alliance with Israel because they share enemies, and is coming to lead the Turkic-speaking states of the Russian "near abroad": Kazakhstan, Kirgikhistan, Uzbekistan, etc. I see no evidence that Russia is "Arabophobic" as you put it, but lots of evidence that Russia is Turkiphobic, and for good reason.

Reading a fluff piece in today's paper about the clash between Brooklyn blacks and Orthodox Jews, I noticed an interesting comment. At a neighborhood meeting held to clear the air between the two groups, black women complained that the Jewish men wouldn't make eye contact or shake hands. A Jewish women came up with this gem as an explanation:

"Often they're praying as they walk down the street; it's not that they don't want to look you in the face. And it's not that they don't want to touch your hand; they won't touch any woman's hand."

LOL! This thread and our society as a whole is teeming with people complaining about women's rights in Saudi Arabia and in the back woods of Utah. I can't recall anyone EVER complaining about these religious freaks, though. One reason: people like Cobie running around furiously trying to deny these customs exist.
