Family I have no problem with. A family can be any grouping it chooses to be -- many cults consider themselves large families. Didn't Koresh call his grouping a family?

But family is not a legally defined term (other than by the Census bureau). Being a member of a family doesn't automatically entite you to any specific legal rights. You don't have to go through a legal process to leave a family. The term marriage, in our society, does have very specific legal connotations, does bring with it certain specific legal rights and obligations.

For example, if I give food to a starving person, I have no legal claim on their family to pay me for the food. If they are married, I have a legal claim on the spouse to pay me.

Aside: if we do go for plural marriage, so that a person has more than one spouse, would we say he has two spice? Seems fitting, somehow!
