Andreas, Note that the Athlon 4 runs at 1.40V with a maximum die temperature of 95°C. It is only available for 100 MHz FSB right now.

The industry standard for maximum operating junction temp. for decades, as set by IBM, Intel, Fujitsu, etc. has been 85°C, for long term reliability reasons. Why does AMD spec. at 95?

We are putting it in an Antec SX1040 case with Coolermaster Athlon 1.4 Heatsink/Fans. The CPU we are using is the Athlon MP which is available as 1.0Ghz, 1.2Ghz or 1.4Ghz right now.

The important thing is to get the warm air out of the case. We are using the available 9.2cm fan location above the powersupply and both of the rear 8cm fan locations. We don't put a fan on the front because that causes the warm air to stall over the CPUs. With Athlon MP at 1.4Ghz we get a CPU temp of 45C. A better heatsink/fan can get it down to 43C but the noise of the 7K Delta fans is unbearable...."

Thanks for the link, but I wanted to point something out about the above statement. The value you have listed for the 1GHz Pentium III is what the processor dissipates under the unlikely scenario that every transistor switches simultaneously. The Thermal Design Point for the processor, which uses the broad mix of publicly available applications used as a baseline in all the other scores, puts the value closer to 24.6W, according to the data sheet.

andreas, thanx for the A4 datasheets. It looks like A4 is halfway between PIIIM and PIII in power consumption. But I think Athlon 4 notebook performance has suffered because ALi MagiK is the only PowerNow chipset that has been used so far. (source: PC Magazine) Otherwise A4 1.0GHz would be performing as well as PIIIM 1.13 GHz.

By the way, did the A4 specsheet say whether AMD had relaxed their max power specification as Intel did?
