Just because something is under attack does not mean the genie is out of the bottle. In any event, if you looked at the material originally linked, I agreed with Nadine that a way of forming a household that expedited such matters as conferring power of attorney, and merely fell short of marriage, was an appropriate way to resolve matters currently. I would suppose that amounts to re- thinking.......

I submit that "preserve" is not the appropriate word here.

Well, actually, preserve is still the right word, for a little while longer. The genie is trying hard to get out of the bottle, but isn't out yet. So far, no state has abandoned the definition of marriage as one man-one woman; Vermont has gone the furthest, unless Hawaii has acted yet, but even in Vermont it's not full marriage. And many states have specifically disavowed recognizing same-sex liaisons as marriages. In a suit challenging our marriage statute here in Washington our state supereme court ruled that our statute limiting marriage to one man and one woman doesn't violate the equal protection clause of our constitution. And the legislature is not about to create gay marriage.

There may be a few places in the world where gay marriage has been established on an equal footing with hetersexual marriage, but I don't know of any. Do you?

The genie is struggling, but so far, at least on the legal front, it's still correct to say that heterosexual marriage is being preserved, not restored.
