AMD didn't state this. It was a rumor going around different enthusiast web sites based on that fact that one AMD rep said that the K8 would be a truly next generation technology. Of course, with an ambiguous statement like that, there is plenty of room for interpretation. Additional pipeline stages may be real for all I know, but AMD has not admitted to this directly.

As for the rest of your post, your guess is as good as mine. Nothing you said is outside the realm of possibility, but I tend to think of AMD's evolutionary stance in their designs, as well as the already difficult job they have getting coherent Hypertransport, x86-64, and SOI to work for the same launch. This makes me think that the core design, if different, will be a relatively simple change from the current K7.
