wanna_bmw: AMD didn't state this [Hammer will have additional pipeline stages]. It was a rumor going around different enthusiast web sites based on that fact that one AMD rep said that the K8 would be a truly next generation technology.

I believe you are mistaken in this issue.

I base my belief on slide 66 of the AMD Analyst Conference held November 9, 2000:

(under the heading: The 8th Generation: “Hammer”)

Sustain and increase desktop performance lead
- Architectural performance innovations
- Pipeline supports aggressive clock speed scaling


The general interpretation of the last statement has been that the number of pipeline stages has been increased compared to K7. Of course, you could argue that the statement is not 100% clear about it and leaves room for other interpretations. You would be the first I've heard with such an inclination, however…
