Elitegroup Prefers VIA P4X266 to i845

I found this interesting because they are evidently offering the VIA P4 chipset, but supporting only PC133, not DDR - perhaps some kind of deal is in the works between VIA and Intel.

Today there appeared new info on one more Socket423 Pentium 4 mainboard from ECS based on VIA P4X266. This board known as P4VXAS is designed in ATX form-factor, however, just like its predecessor, P4VXMS, which we have already told you about yesterday, it supports only PC133 SDRAM and doesn’t support DDR SDRAM. So, it turns out that Elitegroup will use P4X266 instead of i845. Of course, this decision of ECS’ is quite understandable, as the VIA chipset is considerably cheaper than that of Intel. That is why Elitegroup will be able to offer cheaper solutions that the Brookdale based ones. As for the absence of DDR SDRAM support, the situation has also become pretty clear now. This company has always had very friendly relations with SiS and of course, they had some idea of SiS’ plans concerning their Pentium 4 DDR chipset. SiS645 chipset announced yesterday has much more attractive features than VIA P4X266. Both chipsets are expected to start shipping almost at the same time, and Elitegroup will definitely stake SiS645 as a better DDR solution for the Pentium 4.
Anyway, here are the specs of the new board from ECS, as to Chinese Gzeasy.com. The board is equipped with 5 PCI, 1 AGP 4x and 1 CNR slot. Besides, there are 3 DIMM slots for up to 1.5GB PC100/PC133 SDRAM. The board also has AC’97 sound, 4 USB ports. The overclocking friendly features include the possibility to adjust the CPU clock multiplier and FSB frequency.
It seems that the VIA P4X266 based boards from Elitegroup should start shipping earlier than the SiS645 based ones. According to our sources, the VIA based solutions for Pentium4 will be included into the company’s price-list in mid August already.
