I wish I had seen your post last night when the interview was fresher in my mind. Graves said that the Israelis have a very effective PR effort, which influences journalists before they actually go to the Middle East. The PR is that Israel is small and surrounded and is struggling for its existence in a hostile region. According to Graves, when you get there you see how powerful Israel is and how pitiful the Palestinians are. He called the Israelis arrogant in their attitude towards Palestinians, both as a country and individually. Used that word a number of times. He gave an example of a Palestinian town that was subsisting until some Jewish settlers decided to take over the high part of town. The Palestinians had long lived off a single water source in the town. When it was then taken over by the settlers, the townspeople had to pay them for water what they could ill afford to pay. He also spoke to the question of responsibility for the violence. Whenever there is terrorism aimed at Jews, there is an expectation that it is part of a campaign and that Arafat should step up and do something about it. When there is Jewish terrorism against Palestinians, people treat it as some extremists taking individual action, not as something sanctioned by the Jewish leadership. He said, too, that punishment for the Jewish terrorists is a slap on the wrist. I thought that Graves made his points very effectively and credibly, which is why I recommended it to Tim for some counterpoint. His presentation was quite nuanced and I'm sure that I have not done it justice, but this is the gist of what he said. Karen
