Christopher, I've had a Dell laptop for almost a year and it's fine. I chose Dell because of a 3 year warranty and I paid no sales tax because Dell has no offices in CA.

Since memory is cheap now I would currently buy...

at least 256 MB DRAM
15" screen [Dell has 3 types. Buy the best for more $$]
800 MHz processor [it's plenty fast]
20 GB hard drive [at least]
DVD drive [maybe they have a CD-ROM/DVD combo?]
CD-ROM drive [needed to load your own software]
an extra battery for backup [gives you freedom]
a docking station to keep at home [plug in 19" monitor, printer and scanner]
a Logitech optical wheel mouse [USB. I get tired of the touchpad]

and I would wait until October when it will be shipped with Windows XP.

You can try configuring one on the Dell site.
