David ...

just a few observations on your comments/questions

>>>>Windows 2000k

good OS and seems to create few difficulties for the user than other Wxxx ----

>>>>> Pentium III (not IV - not clear but I think I understood) at 1GH minimum

1G is a good "bottom"
but
I heard the same thing said *(from knowledgeable folks) about PII and PIII ....back in THAT transition period ..
I have them both (one P4, three P3s, couple of AMDs, also) and can think of NO reason to stay away from the P4 ...

I just unboxed a new Dell P4 1.3g last week
for my own use as the newest addition to my group

>>>>> probably 512MG of Ram

256 is adequate for most usage with the P4 ---it uses RDRAM running at 400-800 mz, depending upon what is ordered ... Dell is currently shipping 600 and 800 ... I can tell no diff in these two speeds, and can tell no diff between 256 and 512 in the many apps I run

but

512 is better for the P3 even tho 256 will do the job there fairly well, too ..

>>>>> 20G hd

this is the smallest I would go with, 30 or 40 would be better
but
7200 rpm is a MUST ... don't go with 5400 with a new box ...

the rest of the stuff you listed is ok ....
the "best" modem will be the one that comes std with the Dell .... imo

>>>>>>> flat panel vs big tube

the pixel count is far more important than the type
with point 24 being the absolute highest I'd recco ...

I LOVE the flat thinies ... BUT ... no way will I pay for a 19 or larger ....
and I think that 17 is the absolutely smallest to get ....

to give you and idea ...
I currently run a 27in, 2 19in, 4 17in and 1 15in ...
none of them has a higher than .26 resolution ...

good luck

Nemer

Hi bowledover,

Sounds like a fun project you have ahead of you. I've never built or bought anything but OEM systems. Much greater flexibility than with a DELL or any other proprietary box.

Here's a couple of places to do some research:

tomshardware.com

Excellent discussion of the latest from all the parts mfrs.

Be sure to go for a multi-head system, you'll love the flexibility and the opportunity to do multitasking. And remember, regarding trading, if you are using a mouse, you are too late. <w>
