I doubt that since it will probably be a Winmodem [software modem]. Hardware modems work better [Hayes makes one for $60]. But I don't know if Dell gives the customer a choice. If they don't I'd try the Dell-supplied modem first. The one in my Dell laptop is a Lucent Winmodem and works OK.

I think box makers ship with Winmodems because they're cheaper.

Nemer, thanks for your response. I appreciate the detailed, thoughtful answers.

One thing you mentioned I did not understand - 7200rpm. What does that refer to?

Also, you mentioned in another message I would be getting broadband and that had a bearing on what you wrote, I think. We don't know for sure, of course, so, if we end up with nothing more than a regular telephone line connection, would that change any of your comments?
