Re: Look around the Arab world Thomas!! ONLY IN RECENT DECADES are we seeing Arab women being granted the right to an education, or any form of "individual" rights. Even oriental Jews who emigrated to Israel were forced to educate their women and abandon the Arab social taboos they had been forced to adopt while living in those societies.

Finally something I won't gainsay...completely. Unfortunately, the same could be said about women in WESTERN Europe. While American women used to be on an equal footing with their male counterparts since the 1960s, in Europe, backward macho prejudices die hard. A female divorcee was still viewed as a "whore" in most of Catholic Europe up until the late 1970s... And, apart from the "Pierre and Marie Curie" fairytale (the legendary Polish couple who discovered radioactivity), women's wide access to higher/college education started only in the 1970s (our so-called democratization of education).

After all, what's the Pope's viewpoint on women? All in all, the status of Arab women today is about the same as that of European women in, say, the 1930s...
