Unfortunately, Charles, unless this antitrust remedy has some serious teeth in it, the free open market you speak wistfully of will continue to be available only to those big competitors who can afford to buy a congressman or senator to force concessions from Microsoft. Apparently, if you are as big as Kodak or AOL, and have your own representative in Washington, you can get Microsoft to behave fairly toward you. For the rest of the world, a free software market will remain a much more theoretical concept until some Solomonic judge figures out how to hobble Microsoft into submission. Personally, I think they should take all of the Windows source code and turn it over to the Universities and the Open Source community, who could then implement the complete Windows SDK, bugs and all, on Linux and in a set of Java classes. The funding could come from simply taking 80% of Microsoft's cash hoard and funding this big non-profit venture. But so far, the District Court hasn't asked me. Dave

"I think the thing Microsoft fears most" The richest man in the world, Mr. Gates, and heavy on the mister, does not appear to cowering in a corner with "fear" while taking on the DOJ. "I think" Mr. Gates should tell the DOJ to get off his case or he will shut down MSFT and throw the world into chaos and disarray. "free and open market" You're free to write any O/S you can dream up. You're also free to put in on the open market. "I certainly hope the DOJ will enforce the law vigorously and effectively without being swayed by politics" Tell that to Jerry Falwell. Perhaps you should hope in one hand and sh..! in the other.
