Also, by the time of the Revolution, we were not simply the British. A seperate American culture had been developing.

A separate culture perhaps, but an undeniably European one. The colonists were not an indigenous population, and they were colonizers, not the colonized. Their rebellion against the mother country was fundamentally different than those involving colonized peoples.
