Leapfrogging!

Tony, I think the leapfrogging might happen again. It seems that AMD's and INTC's cpu generations are off by 1-2 years. So, the Athlon had supremacy for about 2 years and I think the P4 will have frequency ( if not absolute performance when it the Mhz gap increases more ) supremacy for 1-1 1/2 years and then the hammer should beat the p4 for a while and on and on and on.......

Except if one tries to out-leapfrog the other and design a chip within
a smaller design cycle anticipating that the competitor is going to leapfrog.
It leads to much higher performance in short time but cannot be sustained.
The company with the most stamina wins. This is what capitalism is about:
Selling 1GHz processors for $100!

Constantine, <then the hammer should beat the p4 for a while and on and on and on.......>

I don't expect much out of Hammer. My guess is that it will be largely based off of the Athlon core, and the performance improvements will only show up with x86-64, which requires specific software support. And AMD continues to rely on the failed "Build it and they will come" philosophy of getting software support.
