SUVs in particular are enormously profitable for both companies. Most of the design is fairly mature technology and constant from year to year, with new sheet metal bolted on.

A large chunk of GM's profits come from financing (both loans and leases), not from the cars themselves. I haven't looked at Ford's financials, but expect the same is true there.

Ford's stock has no doubt suffered because of the tire recall, and the ignition recall, and ...
