Interesting that you use the term Fantasy.
Someone once used this term and he may be now very sorry not to have considered the real thing:

In Indonesia we were building fixed line access. The US West people brought this concept not very popular here in Euroland of using Digital Loop Carriers (DLC)

Siemens Nachrichten Kabel (NK) went to there as part of the implementation team. But there wasn't cables to be laid. There was lots of DLC to be deployed.

Once we ran out of places within HDSL distance, NK people froze. They expected that the customer would come to then asking for copper cable.

I had this idea of deploying a DLC and ran a short copper cable out of it to reach the pockets of subscribers crying for service.

NK people called a fantasy. I didn't take that lightly. But there wasn't much I could do.

Result: Siemens sold all its cable factories, telecom cables, power cables and fiber optical cables. (Corning and Pirelli bought the business. Got rid of all those guys that called my idea fantasy.

If you meet some unemployed people called Lindschinger or Hagemmann, (crying over their beers in one biergarten in Munich (they're in fact Austrians) tell them that I send my regards to them.
