re: DoCoMo's 3G service disappoints
----------

"It's next to useless," said Hagiwara... Some problems Hagiwara noted were repeatedly disrupted connections, poor battery life and a lack of content specifically designed for the faster transmission speed."

How does VOD's Gent feel today? Gent says he's a year behind NTT. Euro vendors and carriers haven't progressed sufficiently technologically to even accurately grasp the gravity of NTT's present problems, which are, of course, their future.

Is there any doubt why SK has not accepted NTT's check for a new wCDMA network in their imt2000 3G spectrum? How long before we read that SK petitions MII for cdma2000 for its 3G license?

"..We believe that South Korea's SK Telecom is considering abandoning plans to deploy W-CDMA on its new 3G frequencies and is considering expanding its CDMA2000 network instead... Contacts at SK Telecom have told us the carrier may petition the Korean Ministry of Communications for permission to install a CDMA2000 3G network on its new 3G frequency licenses... Several news sources in Korea and newsletters are reporting that the NTT DoCoMo strategic investment in SK Telecom has been put on hold until at least the end of July because of SK's re-evaluation of W-CDMA.." First Union Securities, 7/16 - Message 16081518

Well...... it's nearing the end of August.

A rumor was recently floated that NTT wants a piece of Unicom... How likely is Unicom to commit into this dead end mess in return for NTT's cash? Mobil is presently wed to wCDMA - can Unicom spot an opportunity for advantage?

"It's not a matter of months but a matter of a year," he said, adding that DoCoMo alone cannot solve the problem and that cooperation among handset makers is becoming a necessity."

So much for the October date.... or a 2001 date. Why does he think a year? What magical will transpire in 12 months?

"It would be much cheaper to buy a compact disc" than to download a tune via FOMA, he said."

An implausible technology, beyond their capability to perfect, ridden with bugs... that requires excessive power... with an unreasonable business model... How did they make such a complete mess of things?

Synchronous handoff would go a long way toward resolving disrupted connections and battery problems....

"..I don't believe that WCDMA--built to circumvent Qualcomm's IP--is going to work as now defined--I really
believe that the WCDMA camp is going to find themselves behind the technology curve and that they will
have to go back and redesign their systems to make them work..

"..DoCoMo looks destined to become a company with only modest growth."

Time for the paper tiger to fall?

The battery life issue is also a formidable hurdle. While in call-waiting mode, FOMA cellphones must be recharged after just one day.

Since FOMA handsets use more electricity than conventional cellular phones, LSI semiconductors will have to be improved to extend battery life, according to a top DoCoMo executive in charge of network infrastructure.

First data I've seen on the standby power draw. While it is inevitable that the handset chew through power when receiving and especially when broadcasting high rates of data, there is no reason that it should do so when in standby. Either the protocol is poor, or the ASIC design is poor in that it doesn't shut down used sections when in standby. I'd love to know which.
