You are correct about what the English did to the Irish but it is probably high time to let it go. The people fighting there right now have no clear idea why they are fighting. It certainly has nothing to do with religion and the blight has been over for some time. The most terrible crime was extinguishing the lyrical language of Eire. Slainte

On citizenship, my point was that the 'Irish' in the American colonies could not be Irish nationality because there was none... come from Ireland, certainly: hate the British crown, no doubt <g>: but Ireland was at the time a part of the UK... As for the potato famine - the attitude of the British government was much the same as for any other suffering poor group without political representation under their rule... i.e., so? There was no more help given to the poor in Britain, either, when they suffered incredible privations - for example, under enclosure or the onset of industrialisation - save by individual enlightened types (who were also active in Ireland). Basically it wasn't that they were Irish - just that the rich OF THE TIME mostly did not care, and ran government for their own ends - and only the relatively wealthy had the vote then in the UK. Today's standards of decency and responsibility can't really be applied. Although of course the left wing was active in advocating collective responsibility, even then... I'm pleased to see you arguing this case! (LOL).
