You may have something there when you say politics may be involved with keeping the YEN up... As the world's second largest economy with good production capacity, it would not be prudent to let the YEN fall much further because they would be even more price competitive than they are now... This would mean an increase in sales of their exports because of the cheaper YEN and a decrease in sales of the rest of the world's exports because the YEN's lower value... So, the G7 steps in behind closed doors to cook the books to ensure that the other countries don't lose their share of the export business to Japan's cheaper YEN...
