I thought "Founding Brothers" was quite good. Relatively short and pithy, and well written. Ellis has earlier biographies of Adams and Clinton, the Adams is the earliest and pretty stilted, the Jefferson ("American Sphinx") is better but still on the wordy side.

"pragmatic speech" sounds like a good thing to know, though not for use on SI. I think I read "Ship of Fools" at some point in the distant past, otherwise i don't know Porter. I looked up "The Underpainter", hadn't heard of Jane Urquhart. How do you pick stuff like that?
