Because the same thing goes to FPGA chips of which ALTR and XLNX are both the primary makers. There has been an ongoing discussion on this thread over the past two years as to whether FPGA with imbedded ASIC chips will supplant ASIC business or whether ASIC chips with embedded FPGA functionaltiy will replace FPGA chips. On that score, my money goes to the ASIC guys--i.e. LSI.

Now it may turn that LSI's model is replaced by generic "communication chips" of different kinds, in which case the more company specific model that LSI has will fail.
My guess is that the increased intellectual capital that LSI puts into its chips will hold LSI well as it emerges from this latest semi downturn.

Time will tell
