Opps, Itanium runs like a snail on legacy x86 code..... (from aceshardware.com x86 hardware? As far as we know, the Itanium is supposed to have special hardware to translate x86 code on the fly, but it seems that translating x86 to decent "EPIC code" is almost impossible. x86 integer code runs six times slower than native code, while x87 floating-point code runs up to 15 times slower! The hardware translator can not rearrange instructions and optimize code like the compiler can, and this results in a massive performance decrease. Floating-point code runs even slower because the main advantages of the Itanium, FP instructions with three addresses and 128 entry registry file are not available in x87 code.
