RE:"My guess is that AMD is already selling 1.4GHz Athlons for $100 a piece (25% below the $133 that the Pentium 4 is rumored to cost), while only select vendors seem to be getting Intel CPUs at lower prices, either through a special deal with Intel, or through the grey market"

Finally we agree!...and Intel is selling P4s for $100 as well...to selected OEMS and maybe vendors. What those OEMs can't put in a box they will be dumping into the grey market.

The channels are awash in chips. The chipmakers have no pricing power. They have reached commodity status. Intel might have some in the server area but I suspect the OEMs will be sticking it to them there as well.

As far as paybacks...many think that Intel has been dictating exorbitantly high prices for years. Now it's their customers turn to say "drop 'em"...
