Reagan had dominion over congress and the senate much of his terms. What he wanted he got. Don't blame congress. Reagan spurred the economy with tax cuts but drove deficits sky-high, unleashed S+L debacles on us and left Bush Sr. to clean up the mess. One thing good about Reagan was that he rallied the people. Greed was good and was in but it gave people a spirit of optimism, for awhile, until things like the S+L debacle spoiled the party. Lessons: you will always pay for greed later, deregulation invites white collar crime on a mass scale as well as attacks on the environment, tax cuts = deficits unless you cut SS, military and Medicare and finally the GOP doesn't really stand for small government at all, just looting the needy (social programs) and giving to the rich. Anythuign they can spend they will too. Look who's giving away the surplus now. It's Bush not the Dems. And who gets the money? The very rich, the energy cartel and big military contractors.

Reagan got what he wanted (tax cuts) as long as the Democrats got what they wanted (more spending). The Dems have no shame blaming Reagan for the deficits.
