A.S. REAGAN got us out of the mess Carter got us into.
that is the comment democrats do not want to hear.
>Reagan spurred the economy with tax cuts but drove deficits sky-high, unleashed S+L debacles on us and left Bush Sr. to clean up the mess. One thing good about Reagan was that he rallied the people. Greed was good and was in but it gave people a spirit of optimism, for awhile, until things like the S+L debacle spoiled the party.<
I think it was the bungling of Jimmy Carter that the interest rates blew through the roof 10-15-20%
The health of the S&L industry slowly deteriorated. Interest rates reached levels above 15 percent. Then in 1980 the financial community began to buzz with talk of the industry's mounting problems.
How could the S&Ls surive without problems?

Reagan had dominion over congress and the senate much of his terms. What he wanted he got. Don't blame congress.

If that is so then why did Tip O'Neal always say that Reagan's budget was "Dead On Arrival".

The first couple of years the congress was afraid of him and his popularity and he did get what he wanted. The last six years it was business as usual.
