Yes- I remember this well. I would suggest that they were overwhelmed by wealth, yet somehow recognized that their money would go further in other countries than their own, given the asset inflation they were experiencing.

I would like to think they learned from their mistakes, and now own factories, shares and bonds, obtaining such ownership without driving valuations to extremes.

In studying KYO, I found they've made investments in production in China- migrating production via FDI to low cost centers of operation. They also have operations worldwide.

The Japanese may be the current kicking stool for most of the world, and resented by a good portion of Asia- yet there may be more to the story than us americans are presented by our press.
