Basically what the DOJ/states want is for MSFT to not be able to improve their operating system. No instant messaging; media player etc...

If there is no improvement, does the DOJ want MSFT to continue selling Windows ME as well as XP. That is what they seem to be getting at.

I bet if MSFT does offer Windows ME and XP, no one will want to buy ME. MSFT wins in that case as well if they instruct the OEMs that that XP has to be sold without any AOL icons etc..
One condition I would put on the PC makers is that they cannot call anything a XP operating if it does not complete in every way.

DOJ seems to be treating Windows as if it is some commodity and in that case, msft should make a version to take care of this problem. I bet consumers will go for XP.

actually if these DOJ guys don't have anything else to do, why not starting to inquire why folks like Meeker contributed to inflate worthless companies, thereby making it so much easier for venture capitalists and money managers to rob people's hard earned cash ? I am not a lawyer but in my lingo I would call this "sabotage" or "fraud". Is this palatable enough to the judicial system ? :-) Oh yeah it's higher priority to spot the illegal XP feature :-)

David, re >It’s silly to suggest that msft shouldn’t be allowed to include browser, instant messaging and streaming media software with its operating system.<

Right on! If cars were sold the way some expect Microsoft to sell Windows, then cars would come without tires, without A/C, without radio and even without seats. The customer would have the freedom to shop for those items himself.
