That's interesting.

I haven't really seen a correlation between ADD/ADHD and home discipline.

Of course the little boy in my class was probably disciplined excessively, and possibly in a physical manner.

But other children who take ritalin at our school are not (or I should say, from what I know of their families there do not appear to be parenting issues).

When I worked for the secretary one day as a favor, I had to dispense the children's drugs- which are kept in a locked cabinet in the office. The range of children taking behavior drugs is great. I suspect it isn't all due to bad parenting.

You need to remember our culture is quite different than many other cultures. We have a freedom and a lack of cultural repression that may make it more difficult for children to keep their behavior in check. In Japan, for example, the social pressure to conform is great. This is true in many countries. Americans pride themselves on their individuality- which may make us creative, but also creates problems in large classrooms (imo).

Hi Steve,

Long time no see.

Your experience with children medicated to aid them through school sounds pretty hairy. I can understand that having a stressful home life would certainly exacerbate problematic behavior in school, but I can't see it being causal. I think many many kids have alcoholic parents, abusive parents, hell, abusive step-sibs, and don't get tagged as ADHD in school. They may act out violently or become depresive.

You know, as I type this, I see your point. LOL. I do think it's complicated, as both you and X have said.
