M A R K E T .. S N A P S H O T -- Can stocks muster gains?

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- After closing the week out on a dismal note, investors are hoping stock prices can reclaim some lost ground on Monday, a day ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

The view is unanimous on Wall Street that the central bank will slash rates by another 25 basis points, which would be the seventh time this year.

Glancing at the futures markets, September S&P 500 futures added 1.00 point, or 0.1 percent, and were trading about 1.40 points above fair value, according to HL Camp & Co. And Nasdaq futures gained 8.00 points, or 0.5 percent.

Over in the government bond arena, the 10-year Treasury note was off 1/8 to yield ($TNX) 4.855 percent while the 30-year government bond shed 5/32 to yield ($TYX) 5.43 percent.

Monday will see the release of July leading economic indicators and the July Treasury budget statement. and economic calendar and forecasts.

In the currency sector, the dollar edged up 0.1 percent to 120.44 yen while the euro slipped 0.3 percent to 0.91.47 cents.
