FWIW Stan, I wouldn't make the play. While I have no idea how much of your portfolio is represented with the 4500 shares you currently own, I consider it a substantial amount and if you were to get your 50% to 90% 2-year upside move, gains on the long position would already represent a major win. I'd be more inclined to research a couple of speculative tech stocks to gamble on. Two years out you could possibly obtain the gains the options strategy might net you, and in the process you'd diversify the risk and might have some fun to boot. If you're set on long-term options, then I'd forget buying the puts and simply buy a smaller number of leaps. All FWIW.

Stan, I would not give you advice on your play, but FWIW PaineWebber (why do they have "Paine" in their name?) bot a FULL PAGE ad in Barrons proclaiming that the S&P will be 50% higher on 12/31/2002...16 months from now. While we all know the analysts and brokers have been full of crap, it IS interesting to see one make such a bold proclamation in a full page ad in a place as prominent as Barrons.

StanX, if I have $20K to invest here's what I'll do based on the approximately 43 closing price of AMAT last week: ---

Buy 7 2003 Jan 40 AMAT LEAP Calls @ 14.30 / sh costing $10,010.
Buy 200 Sh AMAT @ 43 / sh costing $8,600.

Now I have $1,350 left after subtracting commissions. This Cash is for emergencies such as buying short-term Options when I'm convinced AMAT has started the Real Climb. I'll also convert the Shares into LEAPs and into short-term Options when the time comes.

In the meantime I can play the YoYo game with the LEAPs and the Shares using the Drop/Catch routine to Buy/Sell while waiting for the No Turning Back Climb of AMAT.
