What the Bush admin. would like us all to believe and what anyone buying their line wants to believe is that the missile defense system is just that-purely defensive. And of course the name itself suggests only its defensive purpose. What I haven't seen mentioned, let alone acknowledged here, is what most of the rest of the world realizes about star wars. It would give the US a first strike advantage. That's why, regardless of the cost or effectiveness, the implementation of this system will stimulate a new arms race- a foolhardy and costly adventure that those nations will spin to their citizens as the necessary development of their own defensive capabilities.
