If we truly wanted to end the nuclear era then we wouldn't be keeping the MDS to ourselves. We would be selling it to any nation who could pay for it, moving from mutually assured destruction to mutually assured defense. But if a perfected system existed, then all existing missiles could be destroyed, right, because they would be useless....as missiles....which would undoubtedly stimulate someone to devise technology to penetrate the system anyway....so even if everyone had the same defensive system does not mean the end of the nuclear era.

Perhaps the Europeans will see the light of NMD, now that Libya has acquired ballistic missiles from N. Korea capable of striking Europe with non-conventional warheads...
