Thanks! As a quick note, I stumbled onto a CHEAP bunch of DE, and have been using it for my silica when I got into a pinch, worked great! I like your pool sand idea and have ofen wondered if I could substitute that. Thanks for your experiential nudge that direction. (FWIW: I set up a gravity feed and wheeled enough of that to know there is maybe 3 specs per 50# sack...not many ppb for sure.) And I've mused those were only there b/c the sand has primarily been pulled from our "golden" state's Columbia Gorge waterway dredging originally before washing, etc...

Nitre, eh? Yes, manganese is a pesky problem outhere. And I heard a story this past weekend about the manganese in US War Nickels driving a local refiner nearly batty---he had a dump truck full of the things he was supposed to refine. He asked me to keep my eyes peeled for a manganese "solution." Will pass along the nitre suggestion (do you guys up there really spell it with a "k"? Interesting...) IF you have any more words of wisdom for him re: manganese posing firing problems, give me a shout...and kick the furnace up to what...2300 F?

Thanks again...again a pleasure visiting with you about the "finer points" of the trade. (PS...am already doing step pouring, but on a smaller scale.) Yes, I always regrind my slag and my cupels --separately of course. No use letting values get away when I've got them that far!

Speaking of Noranda...I've always wondered how often big outfits like them do their baghouse lights...you got any idea?
