The problem is that even if we are at the bottom, i.e. most of the damage has been done, we won't be taking off to the moon anytime soon. In fact, one commentator calls for a decline in the S&P 500 of 50 basis points (0.5%) every year over the next 10 years (after adjusting for inflation).

I think that is well within the realm of possibility. Recall that Warren Buffett too had predicted that we will probably see returns of 4% to 6% over the next decade and a half (he made this prediction in 1999).
