Chris,
I agree there are fundamental rights and wrongs that are outside of the individual. But, I do not base them on religious beliefs.

I always like using examples:

About 20 years ago, I was right out of high school and living in Eugene Oregon. I had zilch in the wallet. Literally no money. There was an apple orchard near where I lived and to supplement my blackberry diet (they grow wild everywhere up there), I stole apples off of the trees. Now understand, I was really really hungry....like wafer thin type of hungry. I literally survived on apples and blackberries for two straight months. Now, I doubt that anybody would sentence me to 20 years in prison for stealing those apples, especially since it really was boardering on survival. But I also doubt that anybody would have faulted the owner of the apples if he had come at me with a shotgun full of rock salt. So even though I was stealing just so I could eat, it was still stealing and the owner of the orchard still had a right to protect his property from the theft. I don't need religious values to tell me that the orchard owner would take offense to my stealing.
